Concept Refinement
Following on from ideation [and concept selection from the client], the refinement examples below show some of the work that is undertaken to work up the chosen concept to a final design for CAD. Refined areas include aesthetics, ergonomic fit, manufacturability/material selection and component fit.
Alongside the drawn examples here, 3D prototypes are often completed at this stage to prove ergonomic/ component fit considerations. Further examples of these can be found on the relevant skills page.
Cordless Power Drill Refinement
Refinement included drawings to combine and refine aesthetic details, 3D prints to accurately decide upon handle form and multiple cardboard models for ergonomic and technical purposes. [Year 4, 2022]

Portable BBQ Refinement
Aesthetic and manufacturing refinement occurred to improve the design based on client feedback. A 3D rough model was also made to determine the height the legs should sit at for optimum use for the greatest breadth of user sizes. [Year 3, 2021]
Tassimo Pod Holder
Refinement
Refinement here consisted of working the idea up into a piece that could be moulded without any sliding cores, and still allow easy access for pod ingress/egress. Dimensions were finalised using 2D models. [Year 3, 2020]
Inter-City Train Interior Refinement
Refinement work undertaken for the WC area of an inter-city train interior, based off feedback within the group [this was a group project]. Greater attention was paid to standards & legislation [e.g. to ensure wheelchairs could fit in the space and then turn around to use the sink & exit]. [Year 2, 2020]
