Fizzy Drink
Maker
Second Year
6 Weeks
The brief set for this project challenged us to design a fizzy drinks maker to rival the SodaStream. The design needed to be made from a PLA-polymer composite, be mass-manufacturable and fit the traditional components of a carbonated drinks maker inside.
Once again, the design needed to fit within the chosen brand's portfolio [Dualit] and the target market aesthetic. There was a choice available as to which consumer group you aimed for out of: New Home Buyers [25-35yrs], Health Conscious Individuals or Contemporary Executives.
Stage 1: Technical Discovery
The first stage of this project was understanding how the product worked, and what components were needed to enable this. The technical discovery opposite helped do this, and is based off a 1970's SodaStream that was disassembled.
Stage 2: Moodboards
Next came research into the design trends that would match each of the possible target markets listed above [see page intro].
The upcoming trends selected and matched to each market were based off ones that were to be displayed at the then upcoming Dubai World Expo 2020 [titles of these are at the bottom of the moodboards- following the same order as the markets listed above].

The trends were then used to inspire the initial concept directions.
Stage 3: Ideation
Initial concept directions for the product. These are:

Direction 1 [Contemporary Executive, Traveller]

Direction 2 [New Home Buyers, Visionary]

Direction 3 [Health Conscious, Satori]

These were presented to the client, who selected Direction 2 to be refined.
Stage 4: Refinement
Refinement took place to improve usability, manufacturability and aesthetic qualities of the final product. This included another full technical view showing the components/how the design would fit together.

A full scale model of the unit and it's bottles was also produced to confirm ergonomic capabilities.
Stage 5: CAD Model
The designs [unit and bottles] were then reproduced in Solidworks- so that they could be transferred to Keyshot for rendering.
Stage 6: Presentation Boards
Final presentation boards made with Affinity using Keyshot renders. Key product features include:

-
On trend colour palette and design features such as the rubber Terrazzo drip plate, which helps prevent bottle scratches.

-
Simple, large one button interface for ease-of-use.

-
Sustainable yet durable PLA-ABS hybrid material body.
