Inter-City

Train Carriage

Second Year

7 Weeks

For this group project, we were tasked to re-design the interior livery of an inter-city rail operator. All zones and multiple user types had to be considered, as well as ergonomic requirements to make the space as user-friendly as possible.

There was a group research stage to this project, which involved looking at brand identity, personas and British Standards relevant to rail interior design. The middle of this project coincided with the first COVID lockdown, so deliverables and challenges of remote group working fluctuated throughout.

Stage 1: Research

Group research was undertaken on user types [personas], brand identity and standards/legislation that needed to be considered within the design stages of the train interior. Some extracts are shown opposite.

Stage 2: Ideation

From the group research, each member individually had to create a concept direction for all areas within the train carriage. These were then presented to the rest of the group so that collectively we could decide which designs would be taken forward for refinement.

It was decided that I would refine my WC area as part of our final design. It was also during this stage that the first COVID lockdown occured.

Stage 3: Refinement

Refinement work undertaken for the WC area. Not much was changed from the initial concept, except dimensions were firmed up and hooks were added on the wall.

The whole idea around the design/colour scheme was to create a distinctly separate area from the rest of the carriage, rather than trying to blend it in. The colours promote a more hygienic environment- with the curvaceous wooden sink unit adding a touch of elegance.

Stage 4: CAD Model

The design was then replicated in Solidworks. The whole unit including the floor was created so it could simply 'slot in' to the final group assembly for presentation material purposes.

Stage 5: Presentation Boards

The final design materials of the group train carriage, with a capacity of 73 persons. Across the carriage, the contents have been designed to be modern and intuitive.

The carriage is not outside the realms of current train interiors, but elements such as the lumbar chair designs and stylish WC help elevate the overall user experience.
